Emotion

Plutchik's theory of emotion:

Physiologist that investigated emotion in suicide, violence, he believes emotion is physcoevolutionary meaning emotion changes through time.

TAXONOMY of emotions:

Basic emotions: biological primitive, Instinct

Advanced Emotion: combination of two basic emotions, make up moods

Phineas Gage: The Man with a Hole in his Head

What does the case suggest about the relationship between reason and emotion?

In this case of Phineas it shows how the brain controls the emotions. At the time they did not have an exact classification but now we do have a term as it explains, "disinhibited", which means that he was inappropriate and losing his inhibitions, socially and emotionally. It is still not sure what part of the brain controls what or if they can interchange, but with this case and the damage that occurred or in the frontal lobes it proves that the brain control the way we act and feel around others.

Research the ideas of Antonio Damasio and his Somatic Marker Hypothesis, and the impact it has made on our understudying of emotion?

Mechanism where emotion  can guide the way we act, specially the decision-making
When a negative somatic marker (like fear) is juxtaposed to a particular future outcome, it functions like a warning, signaling us to refrain from an action. Positive somatic markers act as an added incentive to behave in a particular way. Through this process, somatic markers help control human tendency to discount the future since long term costs associated with a negative somatic marker have the potential to deter an individual away from making a decision
Damasio proposes that somatic markers direct attention towards more advantageous options, simplifying the decision process.

James-Lange & Canon-Bard thoeries

James-Lange theory:
-Emotion, emotions and body are connected
-Earliest theories of emotion
-Nervous system reacts to external stimuli
-Creates a physical events and mimics physical synths
-generate corresponding emotion (smile: happy, scowl: angry)
-Pick up physical expressions of a  certain mood

CRITICISM: not considering mental and physical aspect of emotion

Canon-Bard theory:
-Refutation of James-lange theory, OPPOSITE
-Emotions and bodily changes do not share a cause and effect relationship
-Simultaneously
-Emotion is the cause of physical reactions
-Bear-run-fear vs. Bear-fear-run

I believe that the Canon-Bard theory is correct, not because it is opposite of the theory that suggests that we first act and then feel, but because it states that this two happen simultaneously. I do think that its true that when we are faced with a emotional situation a mind processes also happens. For example when little once I was showering and as I turend I saw a big spider in the side of my shower. I felt scared and disgusted but at the same time my skin also reacted getting goosebumps and running away of the shower. I realized the situation, reacted emotionally which manifested physically.
